Now that you've created your categories and articles and that you've inserted media, let's see how to publish these articles on your site so that your visitors can read them.

 

Publish articles thanks to menu items

Joomla! offers different types of menu items enabling you to publish your articles. To do so, select Menu Manager → Menu item of your choosing and then click the New button. A form opens and the first field to fill is the Menu link type. Hit the Select button. When clicking the tab Article, the following window pops up:

Archived Articles

The menu item Archived Articles allows you to display the archived articles of your website.

1 - Enter a title and an alias for your menu item (if you don't enter an alias, Joomla! will), and choose the menu location and the parent item for your menu item.

2 - Define many parameters such as the article ordering, the number of articles to list, the intro text limit.

3 - Via this menu item, you can define the parameters to control how articles will be displayed, such as showing or not the introduction text, the author's name, the different dates (creation, publishing, edition dates)...

4 - Choose the modules to assign to this menu item.

Once everything is configured properly, hit the Save & Close button.

When you access this menu item in Frontend, you will see a filter allowing you to display the articles by date.

Note: If you installed Joomla! with sample data, the menu item Using Joomla! → Using extensions → Components → Content Component  Archived Articles of the menu About Joomla! is of type Archived Articles.

Single Article

Among all menu items, Single Article is the simplest one. It enables you to easily publish one and only one article.

Select the article you want to publish (1), enter a title and an alias for your menu item (2) (if you don't enter an alias, Joomla! will do it for you), and choose the menu location and the parent item for your article (3).

4 - Define the article's parameters to control how this menu item will be shown.

5 - Choose the modules to assign to this menu item.

Note: If you installed Joomla! with sample data, the menu item Using Joomla! of the menu About Joomla! is of type Single Article.

List All Categories

The menu item List All Categories allows you to show all the articles from all categories or from one selected category.

1 - Select the top level category (the parent category containing the categories to show), then enter a title and an alias for your menu item (if you don't enter an alias, Joomla! will), and select the menu location and the parent item for your menu item.

2 - Categories options: Parameters of the categories' list layout.

Category Blog

The menu item Category Blog allows you to display in a blog layout the articles of one specific category (and also of its child categories if you wish).

1 - Select the top level category (the parent category containing the categories to show), then enter a title and an alias for your menu item (if you don't enter an alias, Joomla! will), and choose the menu location and the parent item for your menu item.

2 - Category options: Parameters of the category controlling what will be displayed in the blog.

3 - Blog layout options: To control the appearance of your blog. For example, to define how the articles will be displayed. By default, Joomla! displays:

  • 1 article using the page full display width.
  • 4 intro articles.
  • These 4 intro will be displayed in 2 columns.
  • 4 simple articles links.

If you scroll down, you will also be able to set up the order of your articles. If you select the "Most recent first" order, then the newly created article in the category will automatically appear first on the blog.

The menu item Category List allows you to show in a list layout the articles belonging to a specific category (and also to its child categories if you want to).

2 - Category options: Parameters of the categories displayed in the list.

3 - List layouts: Here you can define the parameters of your list layout, you can for example choose to display a select, a heading, the dates, the author name, etc.

4 - Article options: Parameters to control what will be displayed for one article (when a user clicks the article).

5 - Integration options. You can add a RSS feed or another type of feed.

6 - Common options: Parameters common to all menu item types.

7 - Assign the modules of your choosing to this menu item.

Featured Articles

The menu item Featured Articles allows you to show in a blog layout all the articles that have been tagged as Featured. To tag an article as featured, you need to edit the article and then, to enable this parameter.
